As Nepal advances towards development, there has been a growing recognition of youth as a powerful force and a major contributor to its overall development progress. In Nepal, youth make up well over one-half of the total rural population. Because of their numbers and potential impact, rural youth must be a major part when dealing with any immediate and long-term solutions to solving problems of rural and sustainable development.
Youth participation, inclusion and engagement is especially crucial in post-conflict countries like Nepal. Effective youth participation in decision-making lead to better policy formulation, implementation and evaluation. Through widespread inclusion of youth, their commitment to and understanding of human rights and democracy are strengthened. Engagement is also crucial to protecting the rights of girls and young women.
Birat SDI is therefore undertaking efforts to empower young people to enable them to take an active role in sustainable and rural development. Our aim is to strengthen and expand youth capacities, knowledge and skills through education, training, support and access to resources to enable them to become productive and contributing citizens of their local communities.
Appropriate Technology

A simple technology can positively change living of the poor, rural households, and communities that are cutoff from the mainstream national development as manifested by installation of solar home system, improved stove, pico-hydro plant and other similar projects in rural communities of Nepal. While the world has seen dramatic transformation in technological fronts with high-end technologies and innovation becoming part of the city denizens, yet some of the poorest and remotest communities in Nepal do not have access to otherwise ubiquitous computer and Internet technology. Birat Sustainable Development Initiative (BSDI) will actively engage to bridge the technological gap of rural and poor students and people devoid of such facilities. With present scenario of Climate Change and its adverse impacts being increasingly felt in Nepal, particularly the mountainous regions and poor communities, building climate resilient and climate smart communities will be prioritized. Furthermore, breakthrough works in green and clean technology fronts have potential to positively impact the lives like never imagined before. Though, technology transfer remains stumbling block, BSDI will work with its associates and partners for the betterment of the lives of the poorest people through the application of appropriate technology wherever applicable. Further, BSDI will work for the deployment and adoption of clean technology for utilization of natural resources in a highly sustained manner.
HEALTH

Millions of people in Nepal lack access to adequate food, water, sanitation, medicine and education. Despite breakthroughs in medical sciences and health services around the world, people in Nepal continue to face unnecessary suffering due to reasons that include climate change, economic crisis and poor governance. Access to clean water, sanitation and basic health facilities are the immediate needs of citizens in rural areas.
Today’s health challenges require a concentrated approach from all parts of the society towards improving the well-being of the citizens. BSDI works to change the lives of the poor and impoverished by reshaping household health. We do this through providing education programs, health camps, training, and technical support as well as resources needed for the achievement of equity in health in rural areas of the country.
Environment Sustainability

Increasing population and insatiable human needs have added pressure on the environment; these have led to adverse impacts on our natural resources. Disproportionate usage of finite resources and over-exploitation of the perennial resources by select few have left majority of the poor in Nepal heavily dependent on the fragile ecosystem to scrap for their living. The unjust allocation of resources have entailed adverse effects on the environment with loss of forest cover, loss of bio-diversity and frequent occurrence of natural disasters to name a few. Staying true to the ethos of sustainability, Birat Sustainable Development Initiative (BSDI) believes that just and equitable usage of resources within the carrying capacity of environment is the path ahead for sustainable development. BSDI seeks to address the ever increasing unsustainable exploitation of natural resources through its development projects and activities by adapting and promoting Low Carbon Development, Clean technology intervention and environment friendly measures. The community should be a forerunner in developing sustainable practices and BSDI will work and partner with INGOs, NGOs, Government Organizations, CBOs, and line agencies to empower and enable people in BSDI’s working areas to achieve their development aspirations with environment sustainability as its core motif. The crosscutting issue of sustainability and development is interlinked with all aspect of the initiatives’ work and the BSDI will uphold environmental sustainability in its current and future plans.
GENDER EQUITY

“Gender equality is, first and foremost, a human right…Empowering women is also an indispensable tool for advancing development and reducing poverty.Empowering women contribute to the health and productivity of whole families and communities and to improved prospects for the next generation. The importance of gender equality is underscored by its inclusiveness as one of the eight Millennium Development Goals. Gender equality is acknowledged as being a key to achieving the other seven goals.” –UNFPA
In Nepal, according to Committee on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), discriminatory attitudes regarding gender roles remain deeply entrenched in the social, cultural, religious, economic and political institutions and structures of Nepalese society and in the media. Due to limited access to education, Nepalese women rarley get the opportunities to engage in activities that would provide a greater degree of economic freedom. However with the emergence of women and development approach in the international context, Nepal, in recent times, too has begun to pay attention to improving women’s position. Women’s literacy, empowerment, and equity are increasingly being integrated in development initiatives.
Guided by these facts, BSDI also strives towards achieving gender equality to not only enable women to better perform their traditional role as homemakers and child care takers, but also to develop qualifies and able citizens. We aim to achieve these objectives by providing women’s literacy programs, income generation programs/activities, awareness building, access to health care facilities in rural parts of nepal.
